B2 First – Writing: vzorové texty

Part 1 — Essay

Zadání: In your English class you have been talking about technology and education. Now your teacher has asked you to write an essay. Do students learn more from online courses than from lessons at school? Notes — write about: 1. cost, 2. contact with teachers, 3. ……… (your own idea).

Online courses or school lessons?

In recent years, online courses have become extremely popular, and many people now wonder whether they could replace traditional lessons. In my view, both have advantages, but school still offers something that the internet cannot.

One obvious benefit of online learning is the cost. Many courses are free or much cheaper than private lessons, so students can study almost any subject without spending a fortune. What is more, they can learn at their own pace and at any time of day.

On the other hand, contact with teachers is far more limited online. At school, a teacher can notice when a student is confused and explain the problem in a different way. Online, students often have to find the answers on their own, which can be discouraging.

Another important point is motivation. In a classroom, students work together and support each other, whereas at home it is easy to get distracted.

To sum up, online courses are a useful addition to education, but I believe that students learn more when they have a real teacher and classmates around them.

Part 2 — Article

Zadání: You see this announcement on an English-language website for teenagers. The best day out in your area — tell us about a place you love to visit, what you can do there and why other young people should go there too.

A day by the river? Count me in!

Have you ever spent a whole day without looking at your phone? I have, and it happened at a place just twenty minutes from my town: the old mill by the river.

The mill itself has been turned into a small café with an enormous garden, but the real attraction is the river. In summer, you can hire a canoe and paddle downstream to a sandy beach, where most people stop for a swim and a picnic. If you are not keen on water sports, there is a cycle path along the bank that is perfect for a lazy afternoon ride.

What I love most, though, is the atmosphere. Nobody is in a hurry, the café plays relaxed music, and in the evening people sit on the grass and watch the sunset over the water.

So if you are looking for a break from school and screens, grab a few friends and head for the mill. I promise you will not regret it!

Part 2 — Email (neformální)

Zadání: You have received this email from your English friend Sam. “I’m coming to your country for a week next July! What’s the weather like then? What should I see? And is it worth going somewhere outside the capital?” Write your email.

Hi Sam,

Great news — I’m so glad you’re coming! I can’t wait to show you around.

July is usually hot here, often around thirty degrees, but we sometimes get sudden thunderstorms in the afternoon, so pack a light raincoat as well as your sunglasses.

In Prague, you definitely shouldn’t miss the castle and Charles Bridge, but try to get there early in the morning, before the crowds arrive. My personal tip is Letná Park — there’s a beer garden with the best view of the city, and it’s a great place to relax in the evening.

And yes, you should definitely get out of the capital for a day or two. Český Krumlov is a beautiful little town with a castle and a river, and you can go rafting there. If you prefer nature, the Bohemian Switzerland National Park has amazing rock formations and hiking trails.

Let me know which days you’re free and I’ll plan something for us!

Best wishes, Jana

Part 2 — Letter (formální)

Zadání: You have seen an advertisement for summer jobs at an international music festival. We need friendly young people with good English to help visitors. Tell us why you would be suitable and which days you can work. Write your letter of application.

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to apply for the position of visitor assistant at your festival, which I saw advertised on your website.

I am eighteen years old and I am currently in my final year at a secondary school in Brno, where I study information technology. I have been learning English for ten years and I recently took the Cambridge B2 First exam, so I am confident that I could communicate easily with international visitors.

Last summer, I worked as a volunteer at a local sports event, where I gave directions to visitors and helped at the information desk. This experience taught me to stay calm and polite, even when people were tired or in a hurry. I also enjoy meeting new people and I am a big fan of live music.

I would be available to work on all three days of the festival and I would be happy to work evening shifts if necessary.

I would be grateful if you could consider my application. I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully, Jana Nováková

Part 2 — Review

Zadání: You see this notice in an English-language magazine. Reviews wanted — have you used an app that has made your life easier? Write a review, saying what the app does, what is good and bad about it, and whether you would recommend it.

Pocket Planner — your timetable in one place

I have to admit that I used to forget deadlines all the time, until a friend recommended Pocket Planner, a free app for students.

The idea is simple: you enter your timetable, homework and tests, and the app reminds you about them at the right moment. What impressed me most was how easy it is to use. Adding a new task takes only a few seconds, and you can share your timetable with classmates, which is perfect for group projects.

However, the app is not perfect. The free version shows quite a lot of adverts, and the reminders sometimes arrive late if your phone is in battery-saving mode. I also found the colours rather dull, although that is a matter of taste.

Overall, Pocket Planner has really helped me to stay organised, and my marks have improved since I started using it. I would definitely recommend it to any student who struggles to keep track of their schoolwork — just be ready to put up with the adverts.

Part 2 — Report

Zadání: The director of your school wants to make the school library more popular with students. Write a report describing how students use the library now and suggesting what could be changed.

Report on the school library

Introduction The aim of this report is to describe how students use the school library at present and to suggest some improvements. The information is based on a short survey of forty students.

Current use Most students visit the library only before tests, mainly to use the computers or to find a quiet place to revise. Very few of them borrow books, as many feel that the collection is old-fashioned. Several students also complained that the library closes at three o’clock, which is too early for those who have afternoon lessons.

Recommendations Firstly, I would recommend buying more modern novels and magazines, ideally chosen with the help of students. Secondly, it would be a good idea to keep the library open until five o’clock at least twice a week. Finally, the library could become a place for clubs, such as a book club or a board games club.

Conclusion If these changes were made, I believe the library would become a popular place for students to meet, relax and read.
